This new volume of the Barcelona Metropolitan Yearbook aims to establish a new link in the long-standing relationship between the Institute and its metropolitan environment. It seeks to continue exploring viable paths between research and action; between solid, rigorous knowledge and practices for urban improvement and transformation.

The first section, “Metropolis and sociodemographic, residential, and economic dynamics,” provides the main analytical elements of metropolitan dynamics. The first three chapters focus on the intersection between housing and the most recent social changes. The fourth introduces a shift toward educational mobility dynamics within the metropolis, specifically among vocational training students. The fifth and final chapter of this section addresses the economic dimension by analyzing productivity challenges linked to the configuration of Local Labor Systems (systems where people live and work, offering a functional rather than strictly administrative approach to the territory).

The second section, “Innovation, citizen science, and participation in public policies,” presents the most significant analyses regarding emerging elements that redefine public intervention strategies. It begins with a chapter that considers the metropolitan neighborhood program as a source of institutional and community learning based on the networks of relationships established in the territory among actors, resources, and projects. The next chapter explores a second dimension of innovation in public policy: analyzing the potential to update the territorial model (jurisdiction and structure) of the judicial system, based on a discussion—grounded in new variables—of proximity and specialization criteria. The last two chapters move from innovation to democratic deepening of policies through citizen science in the context of climate change and through the real involvement of children in shaping nearby urban environments.
