The objective of the research in this document is to analyze the technological profile and the quality of technological innovation (measured in European patents) in the metropolitan regions (MR) of the European Union, and especially in the RM of Barcelona. To analyze the quality of innovation, European patent applications are used during the period 2015-2020, classified by technological field. The quality of innovation is measured by two quality indicators proposed by the OECD: backward citations (BWD) and citations to non-patent literature (NPL). The quality of innovation is measured in aggregate terms and based on the technological classification of patents.
